At a conference i went to recently they presented results of RCT surrounding cortisone injections compared to simple saline there was no statistical significance between the two groups.They didn't have a proper control though they just compared it against saline - I don't get that. Both however improved pain up to and at 4 weeks. So you may as well use saline -it's cheaper. can't remember the study or the joint. likely in my line of work though foot or ankle but may have been knee.

Anecdotally I'd say it works sometimes for my pt. I have also come across several patients who have had problems with scar tissue at injection site - I haven't looked into whether this is usual though. Not sure about shoulder stuff though x
