To follow on from Cogsy - here are some clinics that you could try in Melbourne that are highly regarded on the sports medicine side of things.

Alphington Sports Medicine
Melbourne Sports Medicine
Olympic Park Sports Medicine

These aren't only ones in Melbourne - or even the only 'good' ones for that matter - but they are the ones that I've used and/or that my patients and colleagues have used. They're also the ones that have been consistently recommended to me by others in the field.

I think you'd find that most/all of these have both sports physicians (ie specialists) and sports doctors (ie general practitioners who have done extensive post-graduate training in sports medicine). Given the problem you've described, either type of doctor would be well-placed to assist, and both would be able to refer you on to an appropriate hand specialist, if the situation warranted.

You'd need to check with the receptionist whether a GP referral is required (eg is needed for a sports physician but not for a sports doctor). The receptionist would also be able to advise re the likely out of pocket expense for an initial consult and you'll possibly find that within a practice, the out of pocket varies for different doctors.

You may also find that some doctors in these practices have additional interest/expertise in hand injuries so again, it's worth asking the receptionist/practice manager who in the practice specialises hand conditions, or reading the profiles on their internet site.
