hugh,
I'm booked in for a arthrosocopy on a torn right menuscus next week - had my left one done 15 years ago. The last one worked out really well and I'm looking forward to having two good knees instead of one.
As for recovery time, I don't remember exactly but I think it was only a few weeks. But it was a long time before I trusted it enough to go for a walk along the Western Arthurs.
Climbing should be fine.
