i expect sometimes its helpful and other times not. a model often used regarding performance is the "inverted U", which shows the level of performance compared to level of arousal or stimulation. there's a maximum thats a balance somewhere, too little or too much arousal then degrades performance. each situation is going to be different, sometimes performance is increased by stirring things up, other times it makes things worse.

the adrenaline rush people get before a race often improves performance but being too nervous before getting on stage makes things worse. its different between different activities, stamina type things tend to benefit from high arousal while concentration based things are better with little.

its also possible that a climber will benefit from being stirred up even its unsettling and irritating at the time.
