The cost of the fuel for the helicopters, firetrucks and ambos is pretty much what you are debating here people, the variable cost - the fixed cost (salaries and training costs of the rescuers, capital cost of helicopters/firetrucks/ambos and onboard equipment, comms systems, yadda yadda) far outweigh that and need to be carried anyway - this is where most of your hard-earned tax dollars go.
