Broken Talus bone / crushed sub-talar joint 2-Apr-2008 At 1:24:46 PM CJ
Message
Back in 2001 I also fractured (incomplete) my right talus after a ground fall in the Wolgan. Following the usual array of X-rays and CT scans, I was in plaster (below knee) for 3 months - complete non weight bearing!
Having a missus who is a physio in a major Sydney teaching hospital I was treated by one of the best lower limb orthopods in town. As DaCrux has mentioned, the talus has a poor blood supply, and as a result requires an extended period to repair and rebuild. Otherwise you run the risk of major problems down the track... avascular necrosis of this major weight bearing bone would put an end to your climbing career and probably end your walking days also.
Given the length of time in plaster the rehab time was extensive, and to save you the boring details, probably took a full 6 months following to get 100% strength, range of motion and fitness back.
In partial answer to your second question, the thing I missed most with so much time to contemplate was the ability to run, getting back into climbing became a somewhat secondary concern.
Best of luck with it...
CJ
