Interesting link monty. Those guys have quite a different take on carpal tunnel to the "traditional medical view" which is that the problem is narrowing of the carpal tunnel in the wrist. This puts pressure on the median nerve etc etc... Do you find their pressure point thing works?
To state the obvious, if you dont have nerve compression at the wrist zenben, then an operation on your wrist won't help you at all. Even if the symptoms are typical, most surgeons would still get you to have nerve conduction studies before they got out the knives.
In my (completely indoctrinated) opinion, surgery is pretty good if you've got severe symptoms - in one small study I found (journal of hand surgery 1995), 90% of people had less pain, and 73% of people were "completely or very satisfied" with the results. Their pinch & grip strength actually got worse straight after the operation, was back to where they started at 3 months, and was stronger at 2 years. I very much doubt those people were climbers though! Sounds like surgery might help with pain & numbness but not your climbing, initially at least.
(I guess I should do the disclaimer thing too : that stuff is what I reckon in general, and might be wrong for you specificly)
Does climbing make it worse? |
