I disagree with that statement completely. (The bit about stress fractures). Yes steel carabiners are generally forged, but carabiners of all materials can be hot forged, extruded, or cold stamped. A quick search through various manufacturer's web sites will tell you that. As far as stress fractures, as a material, steel is heavy and robust. Aluminimum is light and strong, but is generally more brittle than steel. Of course all sorts of alloys are produced to give each various propoerties, but as a general rule, I believe that aluminium carabiners are more likely to fracture, break, snap, or fail than steel carabiners.
