Interesting to see this thread resurrected. My diagnosis was confirmed through arthroscopy that there is not any cartlidge wear, but my kneecap tracks incorrectly. This is largely due to flat feet, and the amount of, ummm, 'bushwalking' I have been doing over the past few years.

Lateral release surgery would be required for both knees for me to continue in my current occupation. I have decided against this - the surgeon quote 50/50 chance per knee, thus dropping it down to 1/4 chance of fixing both kness. Not good odds really.

Everyone still says it should be fine for climbing. I have taken up road cycling to try and maintain some level of fitness now that I can't run etc.

I second what everyone else has said about dropknees - significantly harder now.
