To tape or not to tape?

I'm heading outdoors to the Fortress shortly, first time outdoors. I've recently recovered from a ligament injury from climbing and have had people telling me I should tape up before climbing. I popped the ligament on my left hand that allowed me to move my ring and middle finger ... six weeks of not even being allowed to hold a beer can ... luckily I discovered I could do this with my right hand! Anyway, I've seen people climbing taped up and wondered if it did in fact offer any support and if so, how should I tape up to gain the same support.

Out of responsibility to other climbers, I don't want to be half way up a wall and then not be able to use my left hand, and in turn stuff up a day of climbing for others. I don't mind stuffing up my own day, like I said, I can hold a can in my right hand, but ruining someone elses climb ... not on! Any tips or references would be appreciated.
