Pain in biceps 9-May-2005 At 12:05:29 PM rhinckle

'scuse i. should have said brachialis.

this muscle is more active in isometric flexion of the arm. ie locking off.
gentle eccentric contaction with hand pronated will do it no harm. helps in stretching out the muscle and relaxing any areas of spasm.

a general stretching routine AFTER climbing will also help.
stretching before you have warmed up is counterproductive.

some possible causes of pain.

annoying pain
*delayed onset muscle soreness happens on day 2, and it hurts when you wake up and keeps hurting for a coupla days. keep working it and it goes away.
*micro tears in muscle fibre. uncomfortable, but with continued work, within the pain threshold, will result in muscle hypertropy and increased strength.
**referred pain from trigger points in neck and/or shoulder.
e.g. here is infraspinatus pain referral pattern

you may relieve the pain in biceps by the following stretch.
Infraspinatus Stretch
Place both hands on the back at waist level with palms facing forward.
Lean over and allow elbows to drop toward floor, until stretch is felt.
Hold for 10-15 seconds.
Repeat three times, at least three times daily

serious pain
*muscle tears: you probably won't be able to use the muscle.
*internal bleeding (from impact injury) can lead to calcification in muscle. v ugly.

it's worth seeing someone if it's an ongoing problem . GP's are mostly useless with musculoskeletal stuff.

i agree with expat. effective treatment needs more information from you, plus observation and palpation by an osteopath, physiotherapist or therapeutic masseur.
