After ages of sore shoulders I bit the bullet and saw the doctor. Turns out I have a small tear in right supraspiatus tendon right shoulder and full thickness tear in the left. Have had cortisone for right and referred to surgeon for the left. I have been banned from climbing for a while. Looks like a surgical repair is required. Any one else had this and what can you tell me about recovery and returning to climbing?

I can't directly help but I can share my experience

A year ago I "popped" my shoulder on a climb. After poor help from hospital emergency and numerous x-rays I had physios telling me it was the supraspinatus. After dropping the $$$ for an MRI it turned out that it was a broken scapula.

For some reason whether it is weaker bones or strong tendons I have a recurring habit of popping bone rather than tendon. Either way it is often fortunate as bones heal much more readily.

My advice for tendon tears is to take things SLOW. Get it fixed and build up strengths slowly. It is all about ensuring the best recovery in the long term.

I had the quack recommend the cortisone for a sore shoulder only for him to rescind his recommendation when I fronted up for the jab. I have a tear the goes from 11 O'clock to 6 o'clock, and again at 9 o'clock, so I guess that means I'm good for prime time.

I'm up for some more nip and tuck in a couple of months, so will keep you posted on progress.

Having also had the mother of all shoulder injuries to the other one a couple of years ago, I would suggest that you enjoy the sublime experience of moving over stone before you rekindle the experience of pushing your boundaries.

I made the decision that I wouldn't return to climbing until I could do 10 chin ups. They were a bit wobbly, but passed muster ....... eventually.

I'm not sure I could ever do 10 chin ups! I definitely couldn't right now and I'd be scared to even try.

Hi Doc, I had the exact same thing happen to me a few years back and the good news is, if you are patient and get the right rehab routine you can be back on the wall sooner than you think. I had extensive physio and acupuncture to help rebuild the muscles and stimulate the nerves in my shoulder. In terms of exercise I had a daily routine with a theraband and also had to go swimming once or twice a week. I was back on the wall in three weeks (climbing VERY easy stuff, 13/14 on top rope, no bouldering/dynos etc) and after three months was climbing a few times a week. A year and a half on from the injury and I am several grades above where I was before the injury so hang in there and what ever you do, don't rush back into it!

Update:
Had surgery a week ago on what was thought to be a full thickness rotor cuff tear. Turned out I have large bone spurs on my acromion that have been there forever. Problem was one of these spurs was a flap and had been rubbing on the bursar and also damaging the tendon. Long story short, tendon intact and now tidied up. Bone spur removed as well as extremely damages bursar. Recovery expected in a month. Unfortunately the other shoulder will probably require the same treatment. At least it's not a 3 to 12 month recovery.

Good to hear that all went well. I would seriously question the original diagnosis as this would be expected to be revealed with an MRI. Prob worth getting one for the other shoulder prior to surgery.

Seeing surgeon on Wednesday, pretty sure he will go MRI on the right one. I suppose it's quite difficult to diagnose something through your skin and muscle. An MRI on this shoulder wouldn't have saved me from surgery. There was no other option ( except living without climbing, swimming, surfing etc). Just got to get through physio now.

Hmmmm. Strangely familiar. I've been given 3 to 6month recovery. How come you get 1 month. I want your surgeon.

Agreed, one month seems to soon to be crankin' again after a full thickness tear.

Just returned from surgeon. Tendon was badly scraped up but not torn so less dramatic surgery. Going to be on light exercise and work duties till end of may then have to deal with the other one.
I believe full thickness tears do require a very long time, up to 12 months. I've been very lucky.

If this was a result of some accident injury , I suggest you take the help of laws in order to get a fair compensation amount and that should help you treat and heal your injuries soon.

Yeah, pretty sure spurs aren't a result of injury.... you can't just fall over and get spurs.. any ortho could discredit that pretty quick.
