I realise that its kinda pointless to argue relative contrivedness now that no one goes to summits, and I totally understand that people get different stuff out of climbing.

But........I reckon all climbers, before they got too focused in, must have originally thought of climbing as walking up to a cliff and climbing up it. Not; walking up to a cliff, finding the grotty little cave at the base, getting down on their bum to grovel in, then climbing back out to the daylight with hips sucked up to prevent their chalkbag dredging scunge off the floor!

I'd have to stretch my mind a little to see the point.
