Well my experience thus far is pretty minimal. I ventured out every 6-12 months when I was younger to the indoor gyms, never thought much of it at the time but loved it none the less. Most recently however my travels took my to the dolomites where I had my first experience of climbing on real rock. Lead by a guy, my third outdoor climb ever took me up a multi pitch which was one of the most phenomenal things I have ever done - and hence I WANT MORE.
Basically I don't know any climbers here, so I am more than willing to belay, climb and just hang out.
So, if anyone is out there who is keen for a climb at either Altona or CBD in the next month or so, in the hope of leading to some outdoors trips, I would love to tag along.
Cant wait to hear from you. Email me please thearborant (at) gmail.com

I'm a beginner too... (31 year old female) live out in the sticks near Taggerty at the moment but head to town on the weekends and prob permanently soon. Just got back from epic climbing and rafting trip in the states and super keen to keep it up. Love to do some gym training and start the climbing network around here as not many of my friends are into it. Happy to learn with you if you're interested.

As a beginner rock climbing in Melbourne, your first decision should be to move to Sydney. You'll save yourself a lot of grief that way. ;-)

Check out the little bouldering area in Burnley. You will meet people quickly there.
Beautiful spot on the river.
