Heading over at Christmas for a couple of weeks. Anybody got any recommendations for car hire? Looking for something cheap and reliable. So far Jucy rentals seem to have the best deals.

You might be able to pick up a used car cheap over there if you're around for a little while. There's some bargains to be had around the $1000-2000 mark I reckon.

Hi James,
would you know anyone who hires cars on Flinders Island, Tas? Be great if you could send any contacts you have through. I think we're looking for 2 x 4WD wagons as we're likely to have around 6-8pax from Boxing Day (Arr Boxing Day, dep Sun 4th Jan).

Hi Joe,
Not much down there unfortunately.
Most of the companies only do Mitsubishi Magna wagons, Starwagon vans, Ford Lasers etc No 4WD as such..
Have a look at

Some friends and I hired two cars for about three weeks in July this year from:
http://www.shoestringrentals.co.nz/ (found through LP guide)
-I think we got 'mediums', they were cheap and reliable. They seemed the cheapest when I looked into the compeition. I'd recommend them. (The station wagons we got didn't have big engines though so we did drive 'em hard up and down all those hills).

Ace rentals are cheap as, early 90's jap imports but okay. They will give you a car for NZ$25 a day if you phone them and ask.
If buying in Queenstown any time soon there are heaps of cars for 1500 - 2000, mostly subaru wagons that people are trying to flick on after a winter season and before flying home. Resale in Chch is pretty good, but would take time that you might rather spend climbing.

in the many times I've been to NZ, i've found it far cheaper to organise a car on arrival than to book in advance - seriously save yourself hundreds of dollars on the same car and same company. booking cars in NZ is expensive for some reason.
arrive, go to a hostel, pull out the yellow pages and let your fingers do the walking
if you are the anti-social type (ie don't wanna stay in hostels) - a small campervan could be a cheap option for including your accom.

go to www.carhire4aussies.com or some such website, they have a lot of copmanies listed in a neat conveniient central DB. you can get cars like echoes and ... yaris things for cheap, teens per day. i found this to be quite good. you can pick them up from christchurch airport if you're flying in there.
maybe someone else has info on queenstown, but i remember hiring these 1980s cars from a local queenstown mechanic. he owns about 6-8 of these ford things that he rents out also around the $15 mark per day. as he's the mechanic and the owner, they were old but quite reliable. that's about the only innformation i can shed :-)

Avis have a $10 per day deal if you are driving northward. eg Christchurch to Picton or Wellington to Auckland. Max 3 days. Max 900 km. Proper car like a VE Commodore, not a 10 year old Korean buzz box that stinks of cheap perfume to hide the cigarette smoke.
Of course this won't fit into most people's plans.
I've just made two bookings. Drive north. Fly south. Drive north again.
