Hi Trappers,
I'm an ex-Melburnian living here in HK and spend a fair amount of time here climbing.

Often it can be quite hard to convince Hong Kong climbers to take along a tourist but hongkongclimbing is probably the best place to start. Almost everyone here is a weekend warrior pursuing their own thing (new routing, projecting hard climbs etc). On top of that July is going to be the hot and wet season and a lot of climbers tend to chase other pastimes during the summer here.

Eduardo's right, Tung Lung would be about the only place you could expect to show up and get a belay. The second most popular place for climbing (not much of a boulderer myself) would be 'central crags' which is pretty close to the heart of the city (on Hong Kong Island) and offers great views from the top of many climbs. Often you'd run into someone there, but you couldn't be assured of finding someone to climb with.

That said, so long as it's dry, I'm out most weekends climbing something. If you shoot me an email or a PM closer to the date and pray to the weather gods, I'll try to organise to show you something. If you have any more questions about climbing here I'm more than happy to rant on.
