Any interested beginners?

I have tried unsuccessfully to bribe, cajole and downright threaten friends to join me in a beginners w-end of climbing some-where, but no luck - the lazy buggers!

I hope there are some equally inexperienced but interested folk out there wanting to join forces (and cash) and maybe hire a guide from a climbing co or such? I have looked at a few of the indoor gym sites, and it looks as though $150 with 4 students and one instructor is approx. pricing for a week-end.

Also be interested for any advice on getting started, or any beginners courses I may not have noticed, all woud be gladly appreciated.

Why not join the VCC and participate in club trips, ... -> gain your experience in good company 'apprenticeship' style?

I have only just begun regular indoor climbing in the last month but would love to learn to climb outside.
Unfortunatly I am flat out till early to mid September. If you were planning on going around then (or after) I would be interested. I climb with a few people new to climbing so maybe 1 or 2 of them may also be interested. If you have trouble finding some others I could always ask them.

Thanks, that's a positive start! I am thinking towards early-mid October, and it would be great when the weather is clear. Keep it in mind and we'll see what can be arranged. I looked at the VCC though didn't find much relating to beginners. So you can sometimes hook onto a trip?

RMIT Outdoors Club caters for non-students as well as RMIT students. We have rock climbing trips running just about every weekend (usually day trips), not to mention a bunch of other non-climbing trips. The trips are generally suitable for beginners, usually very cheap (ie. typically no more than $20 for a day trip, including petrol costs) and we have all the gear - all you need is a cut lunch!

To join the club you need to be either a member of RMIT Union, or an RMIT student. Union membership varies in price, more info is obtainable from our website (see the Chockstone links page), or just email me if you have some more questions. Sandstone and granite, as well as schist and ice :-)

There aren't many VCC trips at the moment 'cause the weathers crap and most (half) of the club have gone skiing.... but in a month or so, there will be a few more around.... Trips which cater for beginners usual state that in the calendar.

What you get – 6 days of instruction in the Grampians and at Arapiles over 3 weekends (arranged to suit participants). Participant to Instructor ratio of 2:1 Coverage under the Club’s insurance policy.

At the end of the course participants will be competent to lead climbs on rock, place protection, and get off the cliff.

Helen, I'm also slated to run another VCC trip to the You Yangs in about 4 weekends time - beginners are welcome. VCC has a policy that non members can attend 2 trips (or is it 3? .. its late and I forget) as a non-member before being asked to join. VCC trips will start to get a little more prevalent as the weather warms up again and the snow disappears...

hey Rupert, are you up there in the VCC, coz if you are I am wondering why they didnt send my brother and I renewals for our membership. We joined last year, havent been on a trip, but consider it important to stay members so that the climbing community has the numbers when req'd. My brother is chasing it but I would like somebody from with the circle to let them know that most people need reminders. I would hate to see loss of members due to people just forgetting.

Hi Peter,
Your best move is to contact Dave Mitchell - see his contact details on the VCC website (http://www.vicclimb.org.au) - he should be able to tell you what the status of your membership is. I know he sends out a renewal notice to the address that you last supplied to the club - I don't believe there is a additional 'reminder' notice sent if you dont respond to the first. Cheers.
