I went to Cataract Gorge at the beginning of the year with my sis and her bf. Most of the routes are shortish and we had trouble finding them (had a @#$% guidebook – can’t remember what it’s called). There were some really good climbs there – I wouldn’t recommend doing the Overland Track if you’re planning to climb in Tassie though – my knees were so stuffed I could hardly walk.
Anywho, when we finally found the climbs we were looking for, a small group of middle-aged guys (no offence if you’re reading this) offered us some beta. We were impressed coz they were climbing really hard routes (for people their age ;)). Then another bloke turned up and they started chatting to him – turned out it was Robert McMahon and the other guys were climbers from ACT who put up most of the routes around Canberra. So we were amongst legends…
Try contacting Robert McMahon when you go to Launceston – he seems like a great guy and he’s written most of the Tassie guidebooks with Gerry Narkowicz. They’re way better than the guidebook we had – trouble is you have to get a different one for each area.
