I'm planning a trip to California in the second and third weeks of August. I intend to walk up some peaks in the Sierra Nevada but would be keen to do some technical climbing if I can find a partner. Arriving in Reno so Yosemite is also on the agenda. Anyone in that part of the world around that time please get in touch. Cheers Sean

You will have no problems hooking up with partners at Camp4 in Yosemite. The notice board will be full of keen players.

I would stay clear of the valley at this time of year as it is full (of wankers), and head to the meadow. Lots of peaks and shit hot routes.

Yup.....Yosemite Valley is like a zoo that time of the year.....and it may be a lil hot to climb...meadows are definitely a better bet.

Another option near yosemite is to go to red river gorge and bishop.....plently to climb. Take tioga pass and exit the east entrance of yosemite. You should be there in a coulple of hours.

Since ur in neveda...you should not miss Redrocks just outside of vegas.....awesome climbing and very accessible.

I presume you mean Owens River Gorge. Red River Gorge is in Kentucky - on the other side of the country!

I have been in Yosemite in peak season - and i really enjoyed it. It is a circus, but it is also an amazing experience. Having so many amazing climbers from all aroung the world all living together is fantastic. Its a bit like a music festival vibe. Don't expect to get a good nights sleep aroudn the spainairds!- but i guarntee you will have a great time if you stay for a few weeks or more.

sorry....slip of the mind.......nmonteith got it right.

Yeah...yosemite is must see and climb........best to start making reservations soon. A week at least and lots of good climbers to hook up with at Camp 4. Definitely one of the greatest experiences I had.

Same here, best climbing of my life. Wild times, great routes, big adventures.

Put a notice up on the board at the ranger's office... by the time you're back at your camp putting your tent up you have three people lining up wanting a climbing buddy. (Make that thirteen if you're a girl.) Choose the weirdest looking one and get them to drag you up some bad-ass offwidth 10 mins from camp. If he/she cruises it, you're set. If they get spanked, you can both learn to climb offwidths together.

Hot tip - bring a bivi bag - that way you can sleep at any campsite without having to pay tent fees. It hardly ever rains so you will be ok. In our campsite (supposed to sleep 6) we had 18 people in bivi bags!

Hot tip2 - you can sneak into the all-you-can-eat buffet at Curry Village for a free meal - providing you time it at the exact same tiem as a school group walks in. You can also snaffle a free shower at Curry Village if you are sneaky enough.

Hot tip3 - the Yosemite climbing store has everything - but at inflated prices. Make sure you have the essentials!

Hot tip4 - the tourists leave food behind in the bear boxes when they leave. Make sure you are the first in! We lived on free food and stove fuel for a good couple of weeks! If you do it right the place is all free.

Hot tip5 - Don't mess with the rangers. They carry assault rifles, handguns and shotties! They also have their own Yosemite jail and courthouse. If in trouble try speaking Russian.
