I'd post this in with the route beta but have a question which seems to match this thread...

Myself and a friend explored the west face of Buller on Saturday (14/8) in pretty crummy weather with
minimal visibility. We traversed down and across the West face from the skyline ridge (approached from
the West along the walking track leaving Sawmill).

I think we entered what must have been about the second major gully heading up the summit massif (i.e.
rising in an Easterly direction). It was a cosy little gully sloped at about 35 degrees maybe and ending at a
vertical wall of ice. There was a cute little couloir about 2metres wide leading up the wall's right side.

Question: was this area the amphitheatre? We had such lousy visibility we couldn't tell where we were
with respect to the summit in any detail. The ice was crumbly and rotten and a swing of a tool sent the
pick through it and onto the rock beneath. Not ideal for placing ice screws, certainly not cool for hanging
by one's tools.

Just wondering where we were for future reference!
