Just returned from a 2 week trip to Chiang Mai. Crazy Horse buttress is unreal and worth spending time at, particularly if you've never climbed limestone or aren't as confident on juggy, overhung lines. Quality sport lines there, all pretty recently bolted, with lots to offer in the 15-19 grade range and lots of harder stuff as well. If you're looking for an intro to the world of overhung, juggy sport climbing of moderate difficulty before hitting Tonsai, or just to get used to this very different style & rock, Crazy Horse has a lot to offer. The local climbing shop offer transfer to/from the buttress, are super friendly and helpful and professional. They have a great indoor training wall + notice board where you can network with other travellers and find climbing partners easily.

RELATIVELY recently bolted - no rusty, moving, dodgy-looking bolts as in some other parts of Thailand I've heard!! And a fair bit of new bolting has happened, a couple of newer walls have been done (in the last couple years) and lots of previously threaded routes have had bolts added.

I haven't uploaded pics before, I'll try get some pics up as soon as I figure out how its done!!

Sorry Penny, wasn't questioning you; I was looking to extend the recent vigorous bolting discussions all the way to Chiangmai;)

Funny as your post way you weren't fully wrong.

From the very beginning Crazy Horse has been developed with a view to sustainability and safety. To ensure the very highest standards, from the placement of the first bolt CMRCA has kept one of, if not the only, crag history and maintenance record in Thailand. Every route is rigorously inspected and documented from the FA to rebolting. The bolting standard is the Rolls-Royce of sport protection: Titanium Fixe-316 bolts with Hilti-RE500 glue.

Hoping to check it out next month..

"Titanium Fixe-316" - now that's a contradiction. Anyway, sounds like it would be great place. Anything would be better than the sess pit at Railay/Tonsai.

Actually the Titanium Fixe-316 is probably 316 Ti, which is 316 SS with ~0.5% Ti added for corrosion resistance, commonly known as surgical steel.

(Which I didn't know either until I googled it just now)

I had fun last year climbing there, different style to Tonsai for sure.

Access around the escarpment is very meticulously maintained, neat and tidy little paths with bamboo handrails on some of the stairs.

Apparently there is a farmstay within walking distance if you're not keen on the 1hr tuk tuk transfer each way.
