Well, having an intermediate belay might have the fringe benefit of avoiding what happened to Cass. Here it is in her own words: I ended up here (see below - in red) I think when I fell. I was actually making good progress as I'd had plenty of time to study the beginning moves :) and was about at the green but ended up in the red and tried everything from getting back to the start and starting over (not quite enough slack for that) to going straight up (difficult). Ended up working back to the first bolt and then stayed on route. My Beal rope (Joker, 9.1 mm) is rated at 8% static elongation for 80kg. Dangling from 60 meter of rope at 50 kg, that'd be about 3 meters of stretch. Off route indeed...
