The first time I visited the Valley (in late April 1979) I wandered into Camp 4 set up my tent and didn't pull it down for over 3 months. We paid a small camping fee when asked but everything was very laid back. We used to spend a couple of hours a week collecting drink cans which we turned in at the recycling depo for 5 cents each. The cans were all stamped with an official Yosemite Valley logo on the bottom (so people couldn't bring them in from out of the Valley). Eventually we got sick of hunting about in bear-proof rubbish containers with head-torches on so we had a fake stamp made up in San Francisco and made a killing ferrying hundreds and hundreds of crushed cans up from Fresno. I also had a bag of Australian 1 cent coins. About 500 from memory. An Aussie 1 cent coin was the same size as a dime which meant I pretty much lived out of vending machines.
