We didn't go into this area. Not far to walk but the dark green line is a river inhabited by saltwater crocodiles. And it was hot. Damn hot!

A few more. There are hundreds of these things.

Spring fed pool at the campsite. No crocodiles.

And this is getting a bit remote with access issues thrown in. Looks good though.

Hey Kieran,
Where is this? Somewhere in the top end? As you've pointed out there's a lot of rock up there but access and the heat can make climbing pretty difficult. Just out of interest, does anybody know if climbing is permitted in Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge?

The towers are the "Lost Cities" in Limmen National Park on the west side of Gulf of Carpentaria. Had no gear so didn't climb. Also very hot when we were there (end of May). Rock is very variable from hard patina to very crumbly.
There is camping within 50 metres of the towers but Butterfly Springs about 10 km away is better because of the lovely pool there. Apparently this pool dries up later in the year.
The other "Lost City" that we didn't visit requires a key from the ranger to access the 25 km 4wd track in. Or, you could take your chances with the crocs.
The road through the park isn't too bad but a 4wd is recommended. A retired farmer got his old commer van in but he was a bit worried about getting out.
One guy had to hitch out after doing 4 tyres in one day but I think that was more due to bad driving than the road being especially stoney.
The arches are in eastern arnhem land - just outside Kakadu. Beautiful country but you're unlikely to get access permits and they're probably sacred sites as well.
