Congratulations - it sounds like you are taking the right sort of approach to it all. Often easy routes have short sections of technical climbing with rambly bits in between. It might seem stupid putting in gear on the easy bits, but the ast thing you want is to fall off when the going starts to get tough again and keep falling past all the places you *could* have protected. It might sound stupid, but it's not the fall that counts, it's what you hit on the way down. If a route has got a heap of ledges in it, you should be constantly thinking about how to keep yourself from hitting those ledges if everything goes tits up!
