Batu Caves - Malaysia 31-May-2005 At 3:43:11 PM midnight

On my way back from Banda Aceh, I stopped off to stay and rest up with my dad. My longing to climb
was too great. My recent trial to climb in Aceh ended quickly with the sounds of guns getting loaded.
Lucky enough it was the Army and despite I couldn't speak Indo and they couldn't speak English I work
out I could either be shot by Army or Rebels. So i played it safe. Lucky enough there was this one
climbing wall at the university which saved my frustration.

Anyway back to it, desperate to get some climbing in, I got to go climbing at the Indoor rock climbing
centre in Surabaya which led to meeting some keen climbers wanting to do some outdoors so the next
day we tripped it to Batu Caves which have excellent climbs around the whole mountain. There is about
150+ sport routes average around French 6a or Aus 18 and also not far from the KL about 30 minutes.
Apparently alot of the bolts have been all bolted recently to bring more tourism to Batu Caves.

I realized none of them actually did any outdoor yet or lead climbing so it was good experience for me to
lead climb since I just started back at it again. There are many multi pitches to get the top but i let my
inexperience take the better of me and play it safe but man did I want to get to the top. Apparently there is
some Chinese or Hindu Temples at the top. You can however go caving in the inside and get to the top
which is how they must of transported materials to construct temples in the top. It is beautiful limestone
rock that has plenty of good holds though I did think many times it would crumble.

I climb a few different wall faces in one area. There was one route called "Diana in Memory 6c (22) "
which I tried but didn't make it after a few attempts. A very good day for climbing with plenty of little food
houses around. Come well equipt with water as it quite hot.

Anyway if you are on a Rock Climbing Holiday, I do reccommend checking out some of Malaysia. There
is a good place for hiring outdoor gear if you need it called Outdoor Centre which is good priced for hiring
or buying cool french gear. It is accross the road of the Russian Embassy.

Cheers, it was good to climb again and actually lead climb!
