FT is a great place to learn basic mtneering skills. You can camp near Fed hut so when your tent packs it in during a storm you have shelter. Nice slopes near the hut to practice self arrest. I second taking crampons and axe and know how to use them, especially self arrest. The summit ridge is not difficult but can get icy and it seems to be a long way down to the snow gums. Have fun up there.
