I'm originally from Kazakhstan and I've been there last year on Australian passport. There is a number of ways to get a visa, the easiest I think is to call the consulate in Singapore and they'll explain what you need to do. To get a monthly visa, you can get in contact with a KZ tourist company, they'll organise an invitation and you'll get a visa at the airport. Transit visa is a different thing, you may be able to get it at the airport - please ask the consulate.
From what I've heard, KG visa is even easier to get. Please let me know if you like and I can get you in contact with people in Almaty who should be able to organise everything for you.
Definitely no need to send the passport to UK. Also, please don't pay $500 for Almaty-Bishkek ticket, its only 200km!
