2 hours from Leichhardt to city??? It only takes 45 mins to run it.
I'd lurve to live in the Blueys but its not practical right now.
If you live in the mtns you will probably get sick of the commute. It used to take 1hour 15min door to door from Town Hall Stn to Westmead Stn (about half way to the lower Blue Mtns). The commute is pretty crap, espesh at peak hour, standing room only, hot packed trains that are often late/early or sometimes not at all.
The lower blueys would have to be 1H 45mins door to door.
You'll probably be so shagged after a work day plus the commute each way that you won't do much outdoorsy stuff during the week anyway.
I'd either live in the Blueys and work locally (or telecommute more than half the week), or live in the inner-west and ride a pushy/run into town. Then do the train or drive to Blueys on w'end.

Stanmore/Petersham/Lewisham is OK for transport - train and lotsa bus options, plus you can run or pushy ride. Not tooo exxy rent and also close to Leichhardt and Newtown facilites. Never leave climbing gear or valuables in your car though.
(Shit, I sound like a Real Estate Agent).

Personally I couldn't do the western suburbs anymore.
Don't think of them like a compromise that's close to both things.
In reality they are miles from everything...except the Balkans - and hillsong church... Plus you WILL use a car for most things.

I hope this helps.
