I forget to mention that there is a campground right at the trail head to the Magaliesburg crags that we stayed at. So I assume that the Mountain Club will be staying at that one. Has good hot showers and you should not have an issue with security.
Neil,
The weather was excellent at Watervale Boven in July this year. Clear and cool in the shade while hot in the sun. I think around the low 20’s most days. Lots of the crags are shaded by the close tree line, so you can avoid climbing in the heat of the sun. I expect it would be baking in summer. So I think July is the best time of the year to visit.
The weather was more unstable on the Western Cape. We had a bit of rain and storms at Cape Town, Montagu and Rocklands, so allow your self a bit of flexibility. However when the sun came out it was cool clear days great for climbing. Getting up to Wolfberg it was getting below zero overnight, but still pleasant during the days.
Can also agree with Sabu that Drakenberg is worth a look while you are over on the Eastern side. And if you go there you may as well spend 2-3 days to check out Mt Everest as it’s on the way to Drakensberg, bit of sport and trad climbing.
