Whoever told you that has no idea - the baboons in the Magaliesberg are pretty shy at the best of times. Camping in the Magaliesberg is safe. You generally leave your car parked near a farmers house, so break-ins are unlikely and any thieves couldn't be arsed to walk an hour or more to the campsites for very little gain.

There are however safety issues at the urban crags around Johannesburg and Waterval Boven (the mega sport crag 3 hrs to the east) - but go in a group, leave the valuables behind and be alert and there shouldn't be issues.
