The Impacts of Human Waste Disposal on the Ecosystems of the Back country of Tasmania.
Kerry Bridle and Jamie Kirkpatrick, University of Tasmania
This project uses replicated field experiments to determine the impacts on vegetation and soils of human waste disposal in the ecosystems most used by back country tourists in Tasmania. The results of these experiments will be used to develop ecosystem-specific guidelines for human waste disposal that will minimise deleterious impacts on conservation values, while minimising inconvenience to users. This paper presents the results of breakdown rates of toilet paper, tampons and tissues that were buried for 6 months and 1 year.
We will also present results from a parallel study to determine whether the burial of faeces involves any public health risk...
