A landslide occurred about 10pm on the Saturday of the long weekend. A rather large boulder ended up in one of the river side campsites after taking out some massive trees and flattening everything in its path on the way down. The landslide is only 50m from the locked gate. It would not take a couple of parkies with chain saws very long to clear the road. I'm not sure if the NPWS is concerned about the stability of the cliff and this is the reason for the hopefully temporary closure of this area. Judging by the amount of boulders in the riverside campsites these things are going to happen every 100 years or so. The risk is low in my book. The descent into the valley from Wolgan Gap is much more of a worry.
I was up at the Coke Ovens on following day. I don't think any of the routes were affected. We only went as far as Sap and the slide happened further up the valley and could even be in the no man's land area between the Coke Ovens and the real Landslide Cliffline.
We also noticed that a lot of the soil around the big blocks at the base of Necromancer was washed away but they still seemed stable. The path at the base of the cliff in this area was slightly effected. Take care if attempting Necromancer, Black Magic, Planet Waves etc.
