Is there anywhere to camp around Tarana? All I know is that camping is banned within Evans Crown Nature Reserve.

Yes, but it's quite a distance away!
"LAKE LYELL
On the Rydal Road, off the Great Western Highway, 15km south-west of Lithgow. Picnic areas, camping, trout fishing, power-boating, skiing and hydroplane racing. Camping area and toilet facilities"
.
Check the Lithgow Council website: http://www.lisp.com.au/~lithtour/lakes.htm
On the website there's an email link to the Caretaker.

I find Lake Lyall Recreation Area quite convenient for Tarana, the only place (really) close enough. Check the map here: http://www.tourism.lithgow.com/campmap.html
Post edit: ah, too quick there Mr Kuu ;-) ...same place.

There are some expensive caravans masquerading as cabins at the pub. Alternatively you could still camp at the usual spots in the mountains as it's not too far to drive (maybe 35 mins from Mt York?)
Tarana is also perfectly do-able in a day from Sydney, or for more options how about a day at Tarana followed by a night at the Wolgan and a different crag the next day? Personally I'd avoid Lake Lyall.
