Hey guys,

I was trolling through a mate's photos and stumbled across this picture from Kiama Sporting Ground,

and I was curious if there are any established routes down that way? I'll be down that way soon and it looks worthy of checking out.

If I remember correctly, the Bombo Quarry and Kiama "outcrops" were worked over by the IRA, and perhaps others, many years ago.

One of the climb names that I associate with those areas was "Snaily Dog Turds" which never encouraged me to visit. (The grades were probably beyond me anyway!)

There'll be records/descriptions of the climbs somewhere but I can't point you in the appropriate direction.

I had a quick look a few years ago while passing through. Can't remember much but there were definitely a few interesting lines and some bolts. Would probably be good if you lived right there but might not be worth a specific drive from Sydney.

"The Big B" guide by Graeme Hill.
Lots of chipped gear placements. (Now, that IS postmodern - I always wanted to chip a wire placement on a sport route - that's art :-)

Unfortunately, most of the better stuff is now off-limits with the sewerage works and much fencing.

Ooops, sorry, need to wear my glasses more. (or pay attention)
Same rock and quarrying. (basalt)
There are a few climbs there and at the blowhole. Nothing memorable, given how close Nowra is, but if you're into obscure stuff the newer (15yrs??) were done with stainless rings and carrots, should still be in good nick. Low 20s. The blowhole adds excitement.

As a related aside, the Australian Climbing Calendar for 1984 has a photo for April of Geoff Robertson (photo by Glenn Robbins) stemming his way up a slick looking unnamed corner climb at Bombo Quarry, Kiama.
