September/October is fine. Like anywhere in southern Australia at that time of year it can be hot/humid/cold/windy.
1. Don't know what you class as "better off" but I know which option is likely to be a lot more expensive if you already have access to a car. And overall you probably wouldn't save much time if any flying/hiring.
2. Can't comment on recent events. As with most climbing spots if you do everything right (don't leave valuables in car, etc) then it will just be unlucky if it happens to you.
3. If you are interested in moderate grade sport climbing drive straight to Nowra, do not pass go, do not collect $200.
Have fun! And if you haven't been to Point Perp, then callto make sure it is open and go there if the weather is too hot in Nowra, or stay in Nowra if it is too windy for Point Perp. Great choices.
