Couple of climbing gyms in Chch city itself,
The roxx, and the YMCA.
The roxx is the better of the two, but gets busy with kids training.
It is prob the size of Clibfit is st leonards, has lots of lead bolts which get quite popular at night due to the lack of light in winter after work.
There is a bouldering cave with varying steepness, prob the same amount of bouldering as at climbfit if you only count the upstairs bouldering area.
The YMCA i went to once, and it was cold es a chilly bin cuz. no heating made for numb fingertips so i went home. more bouldering to be had, lots of hard roof probs and higher thin wall probs.
There are lots of sloper problems, which is what you'll want to train for if going to castle hill.
As for outdoor bouldering, theres not alot closer than Castle hill, thats of much quality. take a rack and rope and head up to the port hills, for some sandbag action.
Castle rock is pretty cool, oldschool trad basalty crag. lots of small wires and slopy sidepulls. or sport climbing at britten crag.
theres a new guide for castle hill out recently, otherwise just rock up and guess the grade. we found its either easy or really hard, and hard to tell where the middle (V3-V5) climbs are without a guidebook.
Hope this helps.
