Actually I should clarify that. I wouldn't lead on the rope without knowing it's history, and given those couple of frayed areas. Keep it for TR or abseil. I also personally wouldn't lead on 2nd gear off of ebay, simply because I don't know it's history. That would play with my mind while leading. My own rack has some 2nd hand gear bought off a friend who I trust when he tells me it's never been fallen on or dropped. Ebay though, can be a mixed bag. The new stuff you got though looks fine, albiet a cheaper brand. The old twin stem camalots were interesting, I'd not seen any before. And the old Petzl spirit draws were a find, they along with the nuts & hexs should be able to withstand a beating, so probably should be okay to lead on. I guess it comes down to what you're comfortable with trusting.
I think most people know my personal view on buying online from overseas. But I'll copy it here again, just the same:
Plus shipping, plus insurance, plus tax issues, and return problems, after sales service issues, sizing problems, etc, etc... Or you could support local specialist climbing gear stores that rely on your custom to stay afloat, often run by local climbers themselves with a wealth of knowlegde to give, and ultimately keep your dollars in Australia to support Aussies. One day you'll want to pop into the local gear shop to grab some chalk and eye off some new gear, and lo and behold, the shop won't be there. |
