For anyone considering a DIY belay seat I'd recommend the boatswain's chair rig, old-school sailing gear from Ashley's (3829). The cord passes under the seat so if the seat breaks you are still in-the-loop. Used it on my daughters swing. The best thing is that the crossing at the bottom means the seat can be slipped on both axis's to level it. You could use 6 to 8mm hoop pine ply—light and strong (racing yacht design principle: if it doesn't break it's too heavy), with 7mm cord.
