Native Pine protection at Pines, Araps - work bee 30-Mar-2011 At 6:58:17 PM AndyJS

Hi all, first post but long time lurking...

I was actually in one of the groups that camped in the above mentioned area. It was our first time up at Araps, and when we arrived on Saturday there were a number of other tents already set up in that section. We did notice one of the no camping signs away off to the side after we'd already finished setting up, but as it was a) very small, and b) other campers were already in the section, we concluded (incorrectly it seems) that the sign referred only to a very localised area for the purpose of protecting something specific.

As the weekend progressed there were not many other people who also set up in the same section and I started to have my suspicions that we might have made a mistake camping where we did. We did try to look around and find out what the deal was, but couldn't find anything conclusive.

Now, having seen this thread I feel really bad about having camped where we did, and hope that no damage was caused (we're generally pretty careful campers and try to practice "leave no trace" principles as much as possible). So I'd like to apologise to whoever it is that needs apologising to (rangers, other park users, nature gods, etc), and to make amends will pack the hammer and tools if we end up coming up over the working bee weekend. :)

And to finish, I'd say that some better signage (or perhaps better instructions/rules on the notice board) would help out enormously. We're pretty careful and we still managed to mess it up, so what chance do those less thoughtful have of getting it right?

See you on the cliffs some time!

Andy
