Firewood you get from the servos in places around Grampians and Araps is usually redgum to my knowledge mostly comes from DSE managed areas such as Rocklands reservoir.

Apparently with a permit, anyone can go with a trailer and load up with wood. Most people dont seem to bother with the permit and Ive heard loads of stories of people just showing up with trailer and chainsaw, loading up, driving home and selling off the wood.

Not surprising I guess.

With the redgum though, its worth nothing that usually the wood comes from freshly fallen limbs, which are plentiful. There shouldnt be too much established life under/around them but taking them might prevent future establishment. Nothing new there though, its been happening for ages.

Also it probably happens most along the periphery of the areas (near roads).

Taking every scrap of wood from around the campsites is what we should avoid I suppose.
