The collecting firewood one is interesting. Until recently, I thought it was forbidden to collect firewood in any Victorian national park, but it turns out that I was wrong or there has been a recent policy change. Maybe I was confusing it with the UK.

Reading the rules at Stapylton, it said something about only collecting dead wood.

I think that somewhere big like the Grampians, the habitat loss angle could easily be overstated - less wildlife around campsites maybe, but no one can be bothered going more than 500M from a campsite or roadside to collect firewood. I'm guessing this is now allowed to reduce fuel in these areas. In small reserves, it could be more of an issue for wildlife. In general I agree with code, but just found it interesting that this is now at odds with official PV policy.

I would have thought that firewood we buy at the servo, comes from managed woodlands which are privately owned or leased from forestry. There's probably nothing stopping the owners from completely clearing the land for grazing if they wanted to. Better that there are some trees than none. Managed woodlands create different types of habitats to national parks and support different wildlife. Monocultures like pine plantations are a bit crap for wildlife though.
