Having ridden bicycles for many years before helmets were introduced, I gotta say, without a helmet, it is very rare for your head to even hit the ground. Actually, mine never ever did. Your body has very good instincts for keeping the head from hitting things. With a helmet on, you see damage to the helmet when I suspect there would not have even been any contact to the head if no helmet was worn. Having said that, I now always wear a helmet on my bikes. I do chose low profile ones for my road bike though. I like a slightly larger profile helmet for MTB use in case of coming together with rougher ground where the extra profile keeps my head away from contact.
