if you're learning to lead you will find most of the routes you do were done before cams were invented.

you get more protection per dollar for nuts and hexes than cams so leave them to last. most climbers keep 2 or three bolt plates in their chalk bag when doing trad, if you need more than this you can improvise with small nuts.

I'd go with
10 quickdraws
a set of nuts - you might want to get every second nut in a second brand as well.
3 or 4 hexes
1 double and 3 or 4 single slings
4 screw gates and cordalette for anchors

you can do lots of stuff with this. suss out any long climbs beforehand. ask around.

in my experience most climbers probably wouldn't hand over 600 bucks worth of cams to you if they don't know you. maybe I'm just tight. :)

you may also find that many of the more seasoned climbers on this forum have a bunch of hexes they don't use any more (now that they climb hard and carry cams).
