Leading in blocks is more for alpine and ice isn't it? Not necessarily because it's faster, but because both of you can stay warm: The leader does a pitch, sets up a belay, whacks on a belay jacket and belays the second with a reverso. The second is warm from the climb when he/she reaches the belay just when the leader is starting to cool down. Second puts on belay jacket, reflakes rope and swaps gear (lose a bit of time) then the leader takes off again and warms up from the climbing. repeat etc. Nothing worse than reaching a belay, waiting for the second to pfaff and come up, then freezing your nads off while waiting a further hour or two while they have a tricky lead.
