Agree with the 2 above. There are definitely times were laybacking is not a substitute for jamBing; it's the only option. Go climb Nailbiter at Gibraltar as a pure jambing problem and let me know how you go. During that epic 5m layback, I learnt a lot about the art. Like M9 said, small movements, concentrate *hard* on foot placement and above all keep moving. The next move isn't going to get easier if you stand there for 5 minutes pondering it. Place good gear, check your fall potential and bust through it to the next good stance. If there isn't one, get your piece ready, sprint to where you're going to place it, fire it in and get moving again.
