I don't have a problem with their mate in Sydney calling the emergency services. That makes sense.
I reckon their friends in the Pines did the right thing and went looking for them. That makes sense.
I reckon not wanting to walk off an edge and being worried about being very cold is probably not life threatening but I wasn't there and that was their call to make on whether it was an emergency or not.
Climbing one of Araps longest multipitch routes with one confessed beginner (very slow) and one beginner leader (very slow), not clearly working out where the the longest descent at Araps goes before commencing the route, taking a single torch (irrespective of how bright it is) and more importantly only wearing shorts and a t-shirt in light of the above was really stupid. Then again I do stupid things all the time (like commenting on a situation I have heard about throught second-hand sources).
Good to see that this series of errors had a happy ending. I am sure the emergency services and rescue people would rather be called out before their bedtime than be recovering a body or extricating a hypothermic individual off the mountain at first light.
