I did a road trip of the US in the 90s and it was dirt cheap. We bought a van and then climbed the west states for six months. Back then everything was cheap and we found heaps of free camping. I was getting by on about $100US a week. I guess you need about $200 a week now.

We mixed it up by paying to camp at places like Hueco Tanks and Yosemite and just dossing in the desert/bush at places like Red Rocks, Smith Rocks, Wild Iris, American Folk, Maple Canyon, etc. Other ares such as Rifle - camping fees were collected by the resident climbing bum who offered massive discounts for the occassional belay.

Then we sold the van and went to Europe for two weeks - lived half as luxious and spent about $600 a week - wished I had just stayed in the in the US for 3 more months at that price!
