You’re at a social gathering meeting new people and inevitably get asked “So what do you do?” How many chockstoners out there have wanted to say “ I climb!”.

More than any other sport I know, climbing creates participants whose sense of identity is linked to climbing. Even those who get out infrequently, often strongly see themselves as “climbers”. They live it, breath it, read it, write it up on internet forums, talk it, browse gear shops and go on climbing holidays.

So the question goes out. How much of your identity is linked to climbing? How important is it to your own sense of who you are? Would you be a different person if you didn’t climb? How much of your life revolves around it or has been changed by it? How many of your friends do you know from climbing? Do your hands automatically hang off door frames?
