yep. Its actually pretty common there, & despite stories like these of vegetation being cleared the Chief has far far more vegetation currently than it ever has. The guide book has a series of pictures dating back to the early 1900s that highlight the change.

haven't read the link but its unlikely the vegetation removal included any chipping - the rock is super-solid, fine grain granite (ie if you are used to Buffalo then you'd probably find it slippery). Routes that don't get climbed regularly quickly end up covered & filled in with grass, forearm-size trees, & 10cm thick moss.
